Robert B. Albertson

Robert B. Albertson is a Principal and Chief Strategist of Sandler O’Neill & Partners, L.P. He heads Sandler O’Neill’s Investment Strategy Group, which guides the firm’s outlook on the financial services sector. He provides investment strategy for institutional investors, consults with Sandler O’Neill clients, and works closely with the firm’s Executive Committee. He is also involved in the firm's activities in Emerging Markets, particularly Brazil and China.
Previously, Mr. Albertson was founder and President of Pilot Financial, a global financial sector investment fund focused on European, Latin and U.S. banks, brokers and specialty finance companies. Pilot invested in over 25 companies in a dozen countries.
Mr. Albertson was Director of U.S. Bank Research (1987-99) and Global Coordinator for financials research (1997-99) at Goldman Sachs & Co., where he led a team of analysts covering the U.S. banking industry and established initial research coverage of banks in Europe in the 1980s and several Latin American banks in the 1990s. He also spearheaded research efforts on Internet banking and the impact of technology. For a 15-year period Mr. Albertson was rated in independent surveys as one of the securities industry’s premier research analysts specializing in the financial sector, including the Institutional Investor poll, in which he was ranked as the No. 2 in the U.S. and as No. 1 in global coordination for bank research.
While at Goldman, he also worked closely with investment banking, supporting new business development, designing and marketing equity offerings, and consulting on acquisitions. During his tenure at Goldman he was involved in over 20 major bank stock underwritings and IPOs. He has also been a regular consultant on bank mergers, counseling investment bankers, bank managements and bank boards. Prior to Goldman, he was Managing Director, U.S. Bank Equities Research at Smith Barney.
Mr. Albertson has been a frequent commentator on CNN, CNBC, Fox Business and Nightly Business Report and his comments have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Economist and American Banker and other business news media. He is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee, a member and former President of the Bank & Financial Analysts Association, and is a regular speaker before banking industry and supervisory organizations, including many of the largest U.S. banks, the New York Federal Reserve Bank and the Bank for International Settlements.
Mr. Albertson holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science from Carnegie-Mellon University.
